Quintus Horatius Flaccus — Horace — was the leading Roman lyric poet of the Augustan age, author of the Odes, Satires, Epistles and the Ars Poetica. The son of a freedman, he studied in Athens, fought on the losing side at Philippi, and later won the patronage of Maecenas. His polished verse on friendship, moderation and life’s brevity (“carpe diem” is his coinage) made him one of the most quoted poets in the Western tradition.
