Irvin Cobb

1876–1944 · American humorist, columnist & author

Irvin S. Cobb was a humorist from Paducah, Kentucky. He moved to New York in 1904 and became the highest-paid staff reporter at Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World. He wrote more than 60 books and 300 short stories, including the Kentucky tales collected as Old Judge Priest (1915), and later acted in films and hosted the 1935 Academy Awards. His reputation as a Kentucky wit makes him a natural home for a joke about Louisville’s most-married belle.
