J.B.S. Haldane

1892–1964 · British-Indian geneticist & evolutionary biologist

John Burdon Sanderson Haldane was a British-born geneticist, one of the founders of population genetics and the modern evolutionary synthesis. Famous for his wit, his popular science essays, and his experiments on himself, he later emigrated to India. The beetles quip — a jab at natural theology, alluding to beetles being the most species-rich group of animals — became his most-quoted line, even though he may never have said it in exactly that form.
