Jack Payne, 1899-1969 - English bandleader, the BBC’s first Director of Dance Music
Jack Payne ↗ — born John Wesley Vivian Payne in Leamington Spa — ran the BBC Dance Orchestra from 1928, which made him the most heard bandleader in Britain and put him in the first BBC television broadcast in 1929. He left the BBC in 1932, took his band on the road and moved his recording to Imperial, which is how the earliest known reading of this song came to be a house-band leader singing his own vocal on a cheap label in November 1932. Rust and Forbes’s standard discography of British dance bands places that session ahead of both Carroll Gibbons’s and Ray Noble’s. The performance is brisk and unsentimental, the title taken as advice rather than as an appeal.
