Jacob M. Braude (1896–1970) was a prolific American compiler of anthologies for public speakers, including the widely used Speaker’s Encyclopedia of Stories, Quotations, and Anecdotes (1955). According to Quote Investigator, that volume is the earliest known source to print this saying under Ralph Waldo Emerson’s name — offered without any citation. Speaker’s handbooks like his were a common vector for pinning anonymous sayings onto famous names.
