Jacques Revaux, Gilles Thibaut & Paul Anka

Music by Jacques Revaux; French lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François; English lyrics by Paul Anka

Jacques Revaux wrote the melody in February 1967, first shopping it around as an English-lyric demo called “For Me” that several French stars declined. Gilles Thibaut and Claude François gave it its French words, about a couple going through the motions of a marriage. Paul Anka, who had heard the record on French radio, bought the adaptation rights and wrote a completely different English lyric — the same tune carrying an entirely new subject.
