Joan Baez

b. 9 January 1941, Staten Island, New York · American folk singer

Baez began recording in 1960 and was, within two years, a defining voice of the American folk revival — a soprano of unusual clarity, her own accompanist, and an activist who made protest and social justice part of the repertoire. Her live album Joan Baez in Concert, taped on her 1962 US tour and released by Vanguard that September, opens with this song. She had learned it from another singer and did not know who wrote it, so it went out as traditional — an honest gap she filled two years later in her own songbook.
