John Charteris

1877–1946 · British brigadier-general; Haig’s chief of intelligence at GHQ, 1915–1918

Charteris was a British Army officer who served as chief of intelligence at British Expeditionary Force General Headquarters from 1915 to 1918, working directly under Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig. In 1931 he published At G.H.Q., assembled from the papers, notes and letters he had kept at the front and rewritten into diary form. Its passing remark about Lord Curzon is now quoted far more widely than anything else he wrote — almost always under someone else’s name.
