John Muir

John Muir was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author and environmental philosopher, described in his own century as a botanist, zoologist and glaciologist, and remembered chiefly as an early advocate for preserving wilderness in the United States. In the summer of 1869 he went into California’s Sierra Nevada with a flock of sheep and kept the journals that would sit unpublished for decades. He worked them up into My First Summer in the Sierra, published in 1911 — the book that carries this sentence.
