Johnny Nash

1940-2020 · American singer-songwriter · Houston, Texas

Johnny Nash was a Houston-born pop and soul singer who became one of the first non-Jamaican artists to record reggae in Kingston. In the late 1960s he co-founded JAD Records and signed a young Bob Marley and the Wailers to publishing deals — a connection that shaped the lilt of his own records. He wrote “I Can See Clearly Now” and produced the recording himself in London, releasing it on Epic in June 1972. It went to No. 1 in the United States and stayed there four weeks. He died in 2020.
