Philadelphia International songwriting team, 1970s
Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff built Philadelphia International Records and wrote and produced much of the catalogue that became known as the Philly sound. Cary Gilbert, born in 1942 and known to friends as Hippy, grew up in Camden, New Jersey and collaborated with the pair through the 1970s; the two songs he is best remembered for are “Me and Mrs. Jones” for Billy Paul and this one. Gamble and Huff also produced the 1975 Blue Notes recording. Gilbert died in February 1993, aged 50.
