1630–1685 · King of England, Scotland and Ireland

Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660 after the Interregnum, and reigned until his death in 1685. His reign took in the Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666 — the fire that destroyed old St Paul’s and made Wren’s cathedral necessary. He was a patron of the sciences, chartering the Royal Society, of which Wren was a president.
