La Sonora Matancera formed in Matanzas, Cuba in 1924 and spent the 1950s as the house band of Latin American popular music, signed to Seeco Records from 1949 and cycling a series of guest singers through the front line. Nelson Pinedo, a Colombian from Barranquilla, was one of them, and it is his vocal on the Seeco 78 of “¿Quién será?” that SecondHandSongs names as the original version of the song and Discogs dates to 1953. The date is not airtight — Wikipedia puts Pinedo’s arrival in the group a year later — but it is the earliest issue of the song anyone has produced a catalogue number for.
