Laozi (Lao Tzu)

fl. 6th c. BC (traditional) · Chinese sage, reputed author of the Tao Te Ching

Laozi (“Old Master”) is the semi-legendary figure to whom the Tao Te Ching, the foundational text of Taoism, is traditionally ascribed. Traditional accounts place him in the 6th century BC in the state of Chu, though many scholars regard the book as a composite work compiled somewhat later. He is a distinct figure from his rough contemporary Confucius, with whom the sayings of the Tao Te Ching are frequently confused.
