b. 1938 · American historian · Harvard University · Pulitzer Prize winner
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich is an American historian of early America and women’s history, later a professor at Harvard. She won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for History for A Midwife’s Tale. She coined “well-behaved women seldom make history” in a 1976 scholarly article — and has said she was bemused to watch the line become a pop-culture slogan detached from her name.
