Jimmy Page had already reworked the song with the Yardbirds, who played it live through 1967–68 without ever cutting a studio version. He carried the arrangement into Led Zeppelin’s first rehearsals; the band recorded it at Olympic Studios in London on 3 October 1968 and put it on their self-titled debut. Robert Plant wrote new lyrics, though a contractual obligation kept his name off the original sleeve. Their reading — bowed guitar, descending bass figure, long instrumental middle — is a genuinely transformative piece of work, and became the song they played more than any other, on stage at over 400 concerts.
