Linda Woolverton was the first woman to write an animated feature for Disney — Beauty and the Beast (1991), which became the first animated film nominated for Best Picture — and went on to co-write The Lion King and adapt her own screenplay into the Broadway musical. Her speciality is taking a familiar story and giving its heroine a spine, which is precisely what she did to Alice in 2010, and precisely why her dialogue gets mistaken for the Victorian source.
