1901–1971 · American jazz trumpeter & vocalist · New Orleans
Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong was one of the most influential figures in jazz, a virtuoso trumpeter and gravel-voiced vocalist whose career ran from 1920s Chicago and New York into worldwide stardom. He kept performing almost to the end of his life, playing despite heart trouble and his doctors’ warnings — the very quality that makes this unsourced line feel plausibly his. He died in Queens, New York, in July 1971.
