By January 1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd were a band in full stride, and their reading of “Call Me the Breeze” is genuinely superb: Billy Powell’s piano turned loose over a horn section, at roughly twice the length of the record it came from, closing Second Helping on a high. It stayed in the live set for decades and grew into one of the songs the band is defined by. The only error anyone made here was chronological — the sleeve credited J. J. Cale from the first pressing, and the band never claimed otherwise.
