Grever was the first Mexican woman composer to win an international audience, and this is the song she is remembered for. She wrote both words and music of “Cuando vuelva a tu lado” in 1934; MusicBrainz credits her as composer and lyricist of the work, and Victor’s own ledgers name her on both counts. The English lyric that carried the song into the American songbook was written separately by Stanley Adams (1907–1994), later the long-serving president of ASCAP. Grever died in 1951, eight years before the recording that made the song famous.
