American rock band · Detroit · formed out of Billy Lee & the Rivieras
Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels were a Detroit band renamed after they met producer Bob Crewe, who cast Ryder as a blue-eyed soul shouter fronting a horn-driven group. Their run on New Voice — ‘Jenny Take a Ride!’ at No. 10, the ‘Devil with a Blue Dress On / Good Golly, Miss Molly’ medley at No. 4, ‘Sock It to Me – Baby!’ at No. 6 — is one of the great sustained bursts of mid-sixties American rock and roll. The medley is genuinely, thrillingly theirs: the breakneck tempo, the segue into Little Richard, the sheer noise of it. The only thing that is not theirs is the song.
