Muddy Waters came to the song from inside the same tradition — he had grown up with it in the Delta long before he electrified it in Chicago. In January 1950 he played guitar on a two-part Parkway single issued under the name the Baby Face Leroy Trio, with Little Walter singing and on harmonica and Baby Face Leroy Foster on drums. The following month he cut his own version with only Ernest “Big” Crawford on bass, released in April 1950 as Aristocrat 412, again split across two sides of a 78. It is the recording that fixed the song in the modern ear, and the only error in the popular account is chronological: Waters made it definitive, not first.
