Nancy Sinatra

b. 1940 · American singer · Reprise Records, 1966

Sinatra recorded the song the same year for her Reprise album How Does That Grab You? ↗, arranged by Billy Strange, whose tremolo guitar figure is the version’s signature. It is a genuinely great record and the reason the song has a second life: Quentin Tarantino placed it over the opening credits of Kill Bill: Volume 1 in 2003. Sinatra herself credited the revival to “the lonely sound” of Strange’s guitar. The only error is chronological — hers is the cover.
