Neil Diamond (b. 1941) is one of the best-selling American singer-songwriters of all time, behind ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ and dozens more. He both wrote and first recorded ‘Red Red Wine’ in 1967, a modest hit that reached No. 62. There is a neat irony to it: he is the author and the original artist, yet the song is so bound up with UB40’s reggae arrangement that Diamond himself now often performs it that way.
