Nina Simone, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, was an American singer, pianist, and songwriter whose work moved freely across jazz, blues, soul, gospel, and classical music. A central artistic voice of the civil-rights movement, she wrote and performed protest songs such as Mississippi Goddam and To Be Young, Gifted and Black, and came to be called the “High Priestess of Soul.”
