Ollie Crawford wrote the front-page column Headline Hopping for The Philadelphia Inquirer. His column of 13 August 1954 discussed a proposal to build radar warning platforms in the sea up to 125 miles from land, observed that anyone stationed that far out would be lonely, and joked that the orders for those crews would be to sit there rather than do something. Beyond that byline almost nothing about Crawford is documented — and Quote Investigator itself cautions that because the quip was made by rearranging a worn cliché, earlier matches probably exist.
