Latin dance orchestra · recorded for Victor in New York, 1934
Pedro Vía led a small Latin dance band — violin, bass, trumpet, guitar, two pianos and traps — that cut sides for Victor in New York in 1934. On 10 December that year the group recorded María Grever’s “Cuando vuelva a tu lado” in Victor’s Studio 2, with a male vocal refrain credited on the ledger simply as Chiquito and Alfredo Cibelli directing the date. The master, BS-86425, was issued on the 10-inch Victor 32361. It is the earliest recording of the song in Spanish that we could document, and the record most reference works name as the first — but the Decca side had reached the studio six weeks earlier.
