Born Patricia Ann Cole in Los Angeles in 1946, she was singing as an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue when the tour reached England in 1966. She stayed, encouraged by Mick Jagger, and signed to Immediate Records, the label run by the Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Her single of this song, released in April 1967, reached No. 18 in the UK and is the first version ever issued on record. Cat Stevens had cut an unissued demo two years earlier, and it was her producer Mike Hurst — who was working with Stevens at the time — who brought the song to her.
