Pearl S. Buck

1892–1973 · American novelist · Pulitzer Prize 1932 · Nobel Prize in Literature 1938

Pearl S. Buck was an American writer raised in China, whose novel The Good Earth won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize and helped earn her the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature — the first American woman to receive it. Beyond fiction she was a prolific essayist and lecturer, and “The Creative Mind at Work” is among her best-known reflections on the artistic temperament.
