Pery Ribeiro

Born Peri Oliveira Martins in Rio de Janeiro in 1937, Ribeiro came from Brazilian musical royalty — his mother was the singer Dalva de Oliveira and his father the songwriter Herivelto Martins. He was one of the first voices of bossa nova on record, and he recorded “Garota de Ipanema” for Odeon in January 1963 — the song’s first commercial release — which landed on his LP Pery é Todo Bossa. He kept singing until his death in Rio in 2012, and Rolling Stone Brasil placed him 64th among the country’s hundred greatest singers ↗.
