Peter Fleming was a British travel writer, journalist and adventurer best known for Brazilian Adventure (1933) and News from Tartary (1936), and for his work as a special correspondent for The Times. He was the elder brother of Ian Fleming, and wrote essays for The Spectator under the pen name “Strix.” His 1929 letter from Long Island is the earliest instance of this joke anyone has located — though as Quote Investigator is careful to say, he either crafted the remark or was relaying a witticism already circulating on Long Island.
