Phillips Brooks

1835–1893 · American Episcopal clergyman & hymn-writer

Phillips Brooks was one of the most celebrated American preachers of the 19th century, long rector of Trinity Church in Boston and, briefly, Bishop of Massachusetts. He is best remembered today as the author of the Christmas carol O Little Town of Bethlehem (1868), and his sermons and aphorisms circulated widely in inspirational and educational literature well after his death in 1893.
