Prince (1958–2016) wrote ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and handed it to The Family, keeping his own name on it rather than crediting the band. He is the third figure the song’s fame obscures: not the singer who made it famous, not the band who recorded it first, but the author whose demo of it went unheard until 2018. Performer fame and authorship are different things, and here they belong to different people.
