Almost nothing is documented about him. He surfaces in the record as “Rev. H. K. Williams,” a contributor to the periodical Young People’s Service, whose short article on organising church youth societies — “The Group Plan” — was reprinted by The Biblical World in January 1919. Its final sentence is the earliest appearance of this saying that anyone has yet located. He is not known to have coined it: Quote Investigator suspects he was passing along an adage already in circulation, and no biography, dates or further writings have been tied to him in the course of this check.
