Robert Hazard

Robert Hazard (1948–2008) was a Philadelphia rock musician who both wrote ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ and recorded it first, as a 1979 demo sung from a man’s point of view. He never released it as a single of his own; it earned a little local college-radio play and might have vanished entirely. It is one of pop’s quiet ironies that an anthem later heard as a statement of female solidarity began as a male songwriter’s demo — and that almost no one remembers his name.
