Sally Ride

Sally Kristen Ride (1951–2012) was an American physicist and NASA astronaut who, aboard Challenger on mission STS-7 in June 1983, became the first American woman in space. After leaving NASA she became a professor of physics at UC San Diego and co-founded Sally Ride Science to encourage young people — especially girls — in STEM.
