Salvador Dalí was the flamboyant Spanish Surrealist behind melting clocks and a waxed moustache, as famous for his self-mythologising showmanship as for his painting. Alongside his canvases he produced a torrent of writing — manifestos, memoirs and the aphoristic Diary of a Genius (1964) — where quotable lines like this one first appeared.
