Santana

American Latin-rock band · formed 1966

Santana — the Latin-rock band led by guitarist Carlos Santana — released their cover of ‘Black Magic Woman’ on the 1970 album Abraxas, folding it into a medley with ‘Gypsy Queen’. Their version reached No. 4 in the US and became so identified with the band that the Fleetwood Mac original vanished from public memory. The record is genuinely theirs and genuinely great; the only error is assuming a 1970 Santana hit must be where the song began.
