Simply Red formed in Manchester in 1985 and put their reading of the song on A New Flame, released as a single on 27 March 1989 through WEA and Elektra and produced by Stewart Levine. It became the band’s second US No. 1 and one of the biggest international singles of that year. It is a genuinely lovely vocal performance, and the band never claimed to have written it — the only error is chronological, and it belongs to the audience rather than to Mick Hucknall.
