Josiah Stamp was, in Wikipedia’s summary, “an English industrialist, economist, civil servant, statistician, writer, and banker” — a director of the Bank of England and chairman of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, raised to the peerage as Baron Stamp in 1938. He and his wife were killed by a direct hit on the air-raid shelter at their home on 16 April 1941. He is the reason this definition of education spread at all: he used it in speeches through the 1930s and newspapers pinned it to his name — even though he quoted it as someone else’s line and said he disagreed with it.
