Sonny Bono

1935–1998 · American songwriter, producer and later politician

Bono wrote the song and produced Cher’s recording of it. He and Cher were married at the time, and the Sonny & Cher partnership — his songs, her voice — produced most of her mid-1960s hits. He later left music for politics, serving as mayor of Palm Springs and then in the US House of Representatives.
