American R&B group, Rochester, New York · active 1965-1976
Soul Brothers Six formed in Rochester, New York in the mid-1960s around the five Armstrong brothers — Sam, Charles, Moses, Harry and Gene — who performed as the Soul Brothers Five until West Virginia-born singer and guitarist John Ellison joined and made them six. They cut “Some Kind of Wonderful” for Atlantic at the label’s New York studio on March 30, 1967; it was released that May backed with “I’ll Be Loving You.” The A-side scraped the Hot 100 at number 91 and the group broke up in the 1970s, but the B-side became a fixture of the British Northern soul scene. Their record, not Grand Funk’s, is the first one.
