Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee was born 20 March 1957 in Atlanta and has worked since as a director, producer, screenwriter and actor. His feature debut, She’s Gotta Have It (1986), introduced Mars Blackmon — a motor-mouthed Brooklyn sneakerhead Lee wrote for himself and played on screen. Nike approached him to direct and star in Air Jordan commercials as that same character, and the resulting campaign is routinely credited with turning basketball shoes into mass fashion.
