The version the world knows was taped in New York on 18 and 19 March 1963 for the album Getz/Gilberto, with Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, João Gilberto on guitar and vocal, Jobim himself at the piano, and João’s wife Astrud Gilberto singing the English lyric — her recording debut. Verve released it in March 1964; the single reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and took the 1965 Grammy for Record of the Year, while the album became the first non-American record to win Album of the Year. It is a genuinely great record, and it deserves nearly all of its reputation. The only thing it is not is the first.
