Stendhal

Marie-Henri Beyle, who published as Stendhal, was born in Grenoble in 1783 and died in Paris in 1842. He is best remembered for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839). De l’Amour, the 1822 essay in which this footnote sits, was largely ignored on publication but is now read as one of the first modern attempts to analyse love as psychology — it is the book that introduced his idea of “crystallization.”
