Young was a Georgia-born singer-songwriter whose 1969 A&M debut Rock Salt & Nails is now treated as a foundational country-rock record, cut with James Burton, Hal Blaine, Gram Parsons and Gene Clark in the room. He wrote “Seven Bridges Road” about Woodley Road south of Montgomery, Alabama — a two-lane road with seven bridges that he and his friends drove at night — and said he never quite understood why it travelled so far. He also wrote “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean,” recorded by Waylon Jennings, and “Montgomery in the Rain,” recorded by Hank Williams Jr. He died in Nashville in 2016.
