Stewart Brand (born 1938) is an American writer, editor and entrepreneur who launched the Whole Earth Catalog in 1968 as a countercultural “access to tools” guide for self-sufficient living. He edited its various editions and wrote the farewell message on the back cover of the final issue in 1974. Brand went on to co-found The WELL online community and the Long Now Foundation, and remains an influential figure in technology and environmental thought.
