Stuart Gorrell

1901–1963 · American lyricist who spent his career as a banker

Gorrell met Carmichael as a fellow student at Indiana University Bloomington, and the two were friends and roommates. He wrote the lyric to “Georgia on My Mind” overnight, after hearing Carmichael play the new melody at a party. Songwriting was never his trade — he became a banker — and this is far and away the best known thing he wrote, though he and Carmichael also collaborated on “My Sweet,” recorded by Louis Armstrong’s orchestra.
