Susanna Clark & Richard Leigh

Susanna Clark (1939–2012) & Richard Leigh (b. 1951) · Nashville songwriters

Susanna Clark was a Texas-born songwriter and painter who moved to Nashville in 1971 and was married to singer-songwriter Guy Clark; her songs include “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose.” Richard Leigh, born in Washington, D.C. in 1951, wrote “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” for Crystal Gayle and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. Together they wrote “Come from the Heart” in 1987 — and Leigh has spent years insisting, correctly, that the famous lines are theirs and not some anonymous piece of folk wisdom.
