Don and Phil Everly built the close-harmony vocabulary that the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel all borrowed from; Rolling Stone put them at number one on its 2015 list of the greatest duos, and they entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Their “Let It Be Me” was cut in New York in December 1959 with a full studio band and released by Cadence Records in 1960, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Producer Archie Bleyer was the one who put the song in front of them. Nothing about the record is diminished by the fact that it is a cover — the only error is the calendar.
